Residents may first move into homes with high levels of support and then transition to homes with lower levels of support. Each home has officers in charge of household finances and operations. For instance, a resident will be asked to leave if they relapse and a majority of the others vote to evict them. The doors to The Lynn House are open only because of the generosity of our donors. Please know that all of your help goes directly to providing a healing environment for the women who come through our doors. With the exception of one administrative staff position, every one involved with The Lynn House gives freely of their time and resources.
I showed up at the house young, 19, and fresh out of rehab. I was full of fear and still suffered from some natural alcoholic defects. What I started to learn was how to live a life engulfed by AA and fun. Portland, Maine is an amazing city of sobriety with meetings all over town all the time. It definitely helps to have a house full of guys of all ages that are motivated to do the right thing. In our opinion, the city of Portland, the staff and philosophy of the program and the camaraderie of the residents are the salient ingredients in this crucial transition.

The sober-living homes in city neighborhoods operate as nonprofits, exempt from local limits on the number of unrelated individuals allowed to live under one roof. Within a period of time, and with the help and support of her fellow residents, a woman can begin to search for a job and plan ways to become self-sufficient outside the boundaries of the house. Her fellow residents, along with our female volunteers, are able to share with her their experience, strength and hope. With this type of assistance and encouragement, she is able to become familiar with additional supportive environments in the community that will help her maintain her growth. Residents share a strong commitment to independence and are given the opportunity to become productive while living in a drug and alcohol free environment. With assistance and encouragement, our women search for employment while accessing supportive services so they can establish a lifestyle that includes healthy boundaries. Jordan Saunders was born and raised in Harlem, NY. He graduated from Providence College with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. During his time at PC, Jordan’s growing passion to learn about and help others become their best selves motivated him to become a writing tutor and Resident Assistant. Jordan’s desire to provide young laura’s house sober living adults with academic support and personal development skills blossomed into pursuing his master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration. Jordan plans to become a psychologist and open his own practice to continue helping the youth live out a healthy and fulfilling life despite life’s obstacles.
